Kardinal König House

Educational Center of the Jesuits and Caritas

Initiators
The Kardinal König Haus was founded by Jesuits, since 2007 in cooperation with Caritas of the Archdiocese of Vienna, as a "non-profit limited liability company” in regard to the educational operation of the house. Main cooperation is with regard to the “Akademie für Sozialmanagement” – ASOM.

Occasion
Over the years, the original place of contemplation of the Jesuits (1884) was transformed into a education center.

In 1967, the Jesuits built a retreat house and the “Soziales Bildungshaus Lainz” (an education center), which, in addition to retreat work, also set focus on practical education, following the Second Vatican Council with its emphasis on social, societal and political responsibility.

Target Groups
It is intended to address people, teams and organizations who wish to further educate and develop themselves or their employees ‒ personally, in partnership, socially and professionally ‒ , who want to take on new challenges and discover spiritual dimensions in the process.

Objectives

  • “Equal opportunities for all, solidarity and the willingness to share – for us, these are the essential, indispensable building blocks of society.“ (mission statement of the Caritas of the Archdiocese of Vienna).
  • “No dialogue without sharing faith with others, studying cultures, and ensuring that justice is in place.” (34th General Congregation of the Jesuit Order, 1995)."
  • Always considering people in their entirety and approach them with appreciation.
  • Creating a friendly and supportive environment.
  • Taking into account social, cultural, economic and environmental aspects in all activities.

Topics

  • The program focuses on Ignatian spirituality, religious order development, social management, hospice and palliative care and social issues.
  • Adult education
  • Following the example set by Cardinal König, position, openness and dialogue are to be lived and communicated.
  • The commitment to underline the image of an open church in all matters.

Duration
The Education Centre was opened in 1967 for an indefinite period and consecrated by Cardinal König.

Activities
The activities are led and carried out by a multi-professional team with different national, linguistic and religious backgrounds. They see themselves as experts in adult education and in accompanying personal and social development and learning processes. They are committed to continuous quality development and work together with participants and guests to further develop their services.

Form of Organization
Since the foundation of a joint operating company on January 1, 2007 by the Austrian Province of the Society of Jesus and Caritas of the Archdiocese of Vienna, the Kardinal König Haus has been run as "Bildungszentrum der Jesuiten und der Caritas, gemeinnützige Gesm.b.H.".

The Kardinal König Haus is a member of the „Forum Katholischer Erwachsenenbildung“ (Forum of Catholic Adult Education) in Austria and the „Gesellschaftsklimabündinis“ (Social Alliance for Climate) and cooperates with the Jesuit Refugee Service.
